Simpson Strong-Tie has announced the launch of its second generation SDWS Strong-Drive Timber Screw.

The new design ensures faster starts and less driving torque over the original SDWS, and eliminates the need for pre-drilling in framing applications.  The 6-lobe T-40 drive reduces the driver-bit cam-outs for easier installation as well as longer driver-bit life.

This structural screw has a 5.6 mm diameter and is available in lengths from 75 mm up to 250 mm making it suitable for a broad range of applications, from structural framing, including ledger installation, multi-ply timber beam connections, wall plate tie downs, through to landscaping jobs.

The 19mm washer-head provides a broad bearing area whilst the low profile head aims to provide less interference after installation.

Structural load data is available in accordance with Australian Standards for both shear loads as well as withdrawal loads.  Therefore, the screw can be used as an alternative to bolting or traditional coach screws, or for tie down of wall frame top and bottom plates to the end grain of the studs.

The double barrier coating provides corrosion resistance that makes it suitable for interior, certain exterior and preservative treated timber applications.
