Liberal Independent candidate for Curtin Louise Stewart has applauded the Master Builders Association (MBA) platform for its focus on giving the building and  construction industry a voice in the federal campaign.

“I have long campaigned for this sector, which is the largest provider of full time jobs across Australia,” says Stewart, a successful businesswoman and subbies’ advocate, whose work with the federal and WA governments to secure new laws to protect subcontractors’ pay has earnt her the respect of the construction industry.

“One of my key drivers is highlighting the need for greater local and regional economic growth. And that’s one of the reasons I’m throwing my support behind the MBA’s current call for the federal government to back small businesses in this sector, boost house building activity and train more apprentices.”

Stewart, former Chair of Subcontractors WA and a board member and spokesperson for the Australian Subcontractors Association, spearheaded the successful campaign to demand a fair go for subcontractors on big government projects. “Both major parties boast of their plans for a strong economy, yet there is no traction. I’ve shown that I can deliver – it’s become a significant election issue,” she says.

Stewart developed an award-winning technology platform, ProjectPay, that streamlines and protects subcontractors’ pay. She remains committed to supporting subbies across Australia.

“I’ve spent the last two years with Subcontractors WA working with both sides of politics to make sure contractors get their invoices paid on time, in full. It’s the kind of thing politicians forget. But I never will. We’ve seen what independents can deliver interstate in other electorates. Now it’s time in Curtin to have someone who works for the people,” she says.

Stewart now fears a Shorten government will undo all this hard work. Her fears are echoed by the MBA, which declared war on Labor following its announcement that an increase in capital gains tax and restricting negative gearing will result in more new homes.

“Independent economic modelling shows this will not work,” she says.

“Labor’s announcement about CGT and negative gearing, plus its endorsement of Labor candidate Melissa Parke (who, by admission of her own party, cannot win the Curtin electorate) appears to just be another ploy to divert Liberal Party resources.”
