Five factors that help tradies earn six figures

ServiceSeeking.com.au co-founder Jeremy Levitt has developed a set of principles to help tradies crack six-figure outcomes and make money. He has access to millions of data points which reveal why certain trades make money while others don’t.

“When it comes to making more than $200k a year, the surprising secret is to chase larger jobs with an average size of more than $2k and charge more than $100/hour. Tradies need to work out ways to upsell their customers into larger deals,” he says.

“Builders and plumbers are statistically more likely to earn over $200k a year, less so cleaners and gardeners. That said, 3.1% of our house cleaners earn over $200k.

“Our data, based on an analysis of more than 2050 tradies since the start of the year, shows that everyone is capable of making more than $200k a year, but many haven’t learnt the tricks.”

The top-five factors for making over $200k a year are as follows:

  1. Chase large jobs: 18% of businesses who charge $2k per job earn over $200k/year.
  2. $100/hour: tradies are 72% more likely to earn $200k a year if their hourly rate is at least $100/hour.
  3. Experience counts: you are 11-times more likely to earn $200k a year if you have more than 10 years experience compared to just starting out.
  4. Team up: the highest earning tradies have a business partner, giving them the support they need to ride through the hard times.
  5. Positive outlook: businesses who expect “massive growth” in their business are twice as likely to earn over $200k/year.
