NSW Government introduces digital applications for high-risk work license holders

The NSW Government is making is an easier process for construction workers, manufacturers and factory operators to apply for a High-Risk Work License.

Customers can apply for their licence digitally through Service NSW to save users time and money. They submit their licence application online via the Service NSW website and then visit their nearest Service NSW Centre if a photo is required.

Between 75,000 and 100,000 High-Risk Work Licence transactions are done every year in NSW.

This initiative was made possible by Minns Labour Government’s $62.5 million commitment to the Licence NSW platform in the NSW 2024-25 budget.

A High-Risk Work Licence must be renewed every five years and is required by SafeWork NSW to operate machinery, work with scaffolding and undertake rigging.

Licence holders can add theirs to the wallet in their Service NSW app which is available for all current licence holders with a MyServiceNSW account.

License holders will receive an email or text advising them when they can renew their licence using the digital process.

“High-Risk Work Licence holders undertake crucial work in NSW operating cranes, forklifts, hoists and rigs. Holders of these licences are essential workers on construction sites,” Minister for Work Health and Safety Sophie Cotsis says.

“Digitising this process will save workers money and time and should benefit around 425,000 current High-Risk Work Licence holders in NSW.”

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib says it’s another step forward for the future of licencing in NSW by digitising and simplifying the process.

“The application and renewal process was previously time consuming and complex for people to complete. Speeding up the renewal process with this digital solution lets workers get on with the job of keeping NSW moving,” he says.

“We are looking at a wide range of licences to improve the way they are used and make them more secure as part of modernising our licensing platforms to better serve communities.”

If people can’t apply or renew digitally, they can contact SafeWork NSW to talk about other options. Those requiring support to lodge a digital application or renewal can call 131 050 for assistance.
